Jane's story

Before joining Barclays, I was very low in confidence. When I was 15, I’d been diagnosed with a rare retinal condition known as Stargardt Disease. It’s a form of progressive vision loss, and it badly affected my final years at school. I didn’t think any employer would give me the chance to prove I was capable.

But Barclays turned that around. I disclosed I had a disability during the interview stage of my application and from then, Barclays couldn’t do enough to help. They’ve always made sure I have the tools I need to do my job – things like an electronic magnifier and magnification software on my office computer.

They’ve always made sure I have the tools I need to do my job – things like an electronic magnifier and magnification software on my office computer. Thanks to their support for my ambition, I finished my apprenticeship and I now work as an Essential Banker in one of Barclays’ UK branches. Every day, I'm assisting customers with their banking needs – and I’m growing my confidence all the time.

Honestly, I couldn’t fault Barclays as an employer. There’s nothing else they could possible have done to help me. But I think everyone else would say the same. Regardless of whether you’ve got a disability, I’d recommend the Apprenticeship programme to anyone. It’s a great opportunity and a great company – and it’s open to everyone.

Higher Apprenticeships

University isn’t right for everybody. But if you’ve got at least 80 UCAS points (or predicted) from 2017 onwards, or 200 UCAS points pre-2017, or a year’s work experience, this might be right for you. On our Higher Apprenticeship, you’ll earn as you learn – working towards a degree or professional qualification whilst you work at Barclays. Surrounded by practical experience and thorough support, it’s the ideal start to big things with us.

Able to enable

Able to Enable is our new disability internship programme, run with leading diversity and inclusion experts. The plan is to help more people with disabilities to get into work, by providing valuable work experience that could turn into a further apprenticeship with us. We’ve just piloted the programme with two interns, but we’ll take on many more this year. You’ll be able to find out more about that as we launch, but as always, you can still apply for our apprenticeships straightaway if you prefer.
